In Illinois, one in eight infants is born to a mother who did not get all recommended prenatal care. Without this care, mothers are three times more likely to deliver babies with health problems. Regular prenatal visits help to monitor the pregnancy and identify problems or complications before they become serious. To promote positive health outcomes for its members and their babies, Harmony Health Plan, Inc., has developed two incentive programs designed to reward providers for delivering quality care and members for obtaining recommended care.

Free Diabetes Testing to Fight for South Siders’ Health

To tackle the rampant incidence of diabetes in South Side communities, The Clinic at Walmart is offering free diabetes testing, every Tuesday from now thru Labor Day. Faced with an explosion of younger and younger people developing diabetes, with large numbers going undiagnosed, the Clinic is appealing to the community to get tested and take action.

St. Bernard Hospital will host its annual community blood drive Friday July 19, 2013 from 11a.m. to 5p.m. at the hospital located at 326 West 64th Street in Chicago. The blood drive seeks to tackle a significant lack of donors from the South Side neighborhoods served by the hospital, as well as the significant shortfall in blood supplies.

Free Mammograms for Uninsured Englewood Women

St. Bernard Hospital is donating 150 free mammograms for women who live in the Englewood and West Englewood neighborhoods. As part of the ‘Screen to Live’ initiative, sponsored by the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force, the program specifically targets African American women in these communities, who are not covered by health insurance and are over 40 years of age.
