The Beautification Project: Leo High School

See bigger map

School is a place where one can go to learn so many things. However, the surroundings plus the education are suppose to influence each other. But schools in urban communities suffer tremendously with the lack of funding and community support to sustain a aesthetically pleasing environment that can be stimulating and inspiring to be in. Where the rooms can be encouraging, cultured and full of soul. Every day the students spend a lot of time in school for learning and playing.

"If the aesthetic element in the educational environment is to be taken seriously, it has to be anchored in the entire daily life of the school. It has to be a continuous effort, as aesthetics are a quality that has to be worked with continuously, if it is to contribute to the spirit and culture of the school" (dcum, 2001). This beautified environment is meant to helps the students to grow up into a responsible person. Beautiful landscaping and clean facilities can help accelerate the learning process for many young students.

Why Leo Catholic High School?
On Chicago's South Side, Leo is a predominately black all boys Catholic school. Called a "safe space" for male students in a city seeing increasing gun violence and an appealing alternative to "failing" Chicago Public and Charters school, by new Principal Shaka Rawls. Young black males on the south side hailing from neighborhoods surrounding the school, Auburn-Gresham and Englewood deserve better. And I feel that it is my duty to do whatever possible, to ensure that these boys receive an education in an environment that is not only safe but clean. In addition to that, an environment full of encouraging words, images, and art.

What do you plan to get out of this?

Students and faculty are in a 90 year old building that is beautiful but needs a facelift and a good cleaning. My desire is to bring in community members to beautify the school. In turn creating an environment where the students themselves continue on preserving their learning environment.

What do we need?
We need volunteers for a day of service (community members, handymen, landscapers, gardeners, painters and artist!
Donations which include a variety of cleaning supplies (List will be posted) or monetary.
