AG Gold Week 2 Newsletter

ABOUT US
During our first two weeks at AG Gold Camp, we had a lot of fun getting to know each other.  We played games to learn everybody’s names, and we were able to learn more about each other through many other games and activities!

We worked together to create some camp norms that we all agreed on.  We came up with these norms to ensure that everyone has a fun and safe summer.  They keep us following the rules while also having a lot of fun!

Each morning, we begin with Harambee.  This is a time for everyone to circle up, come together, and sing some songs.  Starting our mornings with Harambee helps us all begin the day with a positive, energetic mindset.

In reading class, our teachers are Miss B., Miss Margaret, and Miss Sosa.  The Kindergarten through 2nd grade group learned about rhythm/rhythm words. We also discussed problems and their possible solutions.  During week 3, we are going to learn about four new reading strategies to help us decode unfamiliar words!  The 3rd through 5th grade group learned about the narrator’s thoughts, feelings, and actions in a given story.  We also made beautiful art pictures using only dots!  During week 3, we will be discussing challenges and the different responses we could have to a given challenge.

We made a human number line in math class!

In math class, our teachers are Miss Mandy, Miss Jessica, and Miss Hannah.  The Kindergarten through 2nd grade group focused on fluency in addition the first week, and we started introducing different strategies for the students to use when computing their answers.  The 3rd through 5th grade group also focused on addition fluency, but we began to use double digits and some multiplication and subtraction.  We created a human number line with our students, and we even had a foil boat building competition before our excursion to the boat tour.  Coming into week 3, we are focusing on using calculators, identifying coins, and adding up money amounts before our next excursion to the Rainforest Café!

EXCURSIONS
We have also been having so much fun exploring the city of Chicago through our excursions!

This is us on our excursion to the Shedd Aquarium!

On our excursion to the Shedd Aquarium, we saw the dolphin show and got to touch sting rays.  On our excursion to the boat trip, we learned about the various buildings that create the Chicago skyline.  We are so excited about our week 3 excursion to the Rainforest Café!

We made paper boats before our excursion to the Wendella Boat Tour!

NOTES FROM OUR TEACHERS
“I have had so much fun getting to know all of the campers personally during AG Gold Camp.  They are full of energy and great ideas.  They are always eager to participate and willing to learn!  My experience so far as a teacher in this classroom has been exciting, informative, and meaningful.  We have had a lot of fun so far at camp, and I am excited for the next few weeks we have together!” -Miss Margaret

“The first half of Gold Camp has been refreshing and exciting for me as a teacher this summer.  Learning what interests the kids and seeing them thriving in the classroom together is what makes this camp so special for our students in Auburn Gresham.  There hasn't been a dull moment yet - and I'm so excited to work with all of our kids for another two weeks!” -Miss Jessica
