Location: St. Leo Veteran's Campus

Veteran Town Games - Battle of the Branches was initially created by the Young Entrepreneurs of the Universe (YEU) Veteran Initiatives. Founded by president Babette Peyton, this is an annual healing event bringing able bodied veterans and disabled veterans together for fun and networking through sports, games, wit, and a delicious picnic etc.  This event also serves as a charity event to help St. Leo's Veteran Campus Residents and Alumni.

The Games pit the Army against the Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guards with bragging rights on Who's the Best. Some of the games and specific fun activities were inspired by Command Sergeant Major Timothy Gilmore. The whole event came together for the first time on October 29, 2011 by the St. Leo Veterans' Campus Committee who assumed stellar leadership with Mack Holcomb as the Chairman and Antionette Ellison and the Project Coordinator to form the veterans helping veterans base.  Other help came from staff at St. Leo Catholic Charities, the Veteran Administration (VA), Auburn Gresham VA Clinic, the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation, the 17th Ward Alderman, Veterans' Strike Force, Northwestern University's Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Paralympics Program, 5/3 Bank, some consulting by the Chicago Park District and World Sport Chicago.  All helped in the success of the first one.

The second annual Veteran Town Games - Battle of the Branches, event will be held the 1st Saturday after Father's Day, June 23, 2012. We are in the process of developing a strategic alliance task force to make this year's event even greater. One of the wonderful things about this year's event is that community members will have an opportunity to participate as sponsors, in-kind contributors, resource providers, some vendors and / or as advertisers. Last year approximately 100 veterans participated. This year the Veteran Town Games - Battle of the Branches event is expected to attract around 250 veterans and active duty military, so approximately 50 - 60 volunteers will be needed.

Also, since it will be "Olympic Awareness Month" a special event will be held for women veterans interested in participating in sports.
